Opening bank account in Mexico
It took me 3 trips to the bank to open a bank account but I hope my experience helps you get it done in one trip

Opening Bank Account

Opening a bank account being an expat is a very similar to other processes in Mexico, it needs a folder full of documents. Opening a bank account in Mexico is crucial if you are working in Mexico and it helps immensely with day today activities if you have an account from a local bank. Most commonly used banks here are

  • Banorte

  • BBVA Bancomer

  • Santander Mexico

  • Citibanamex

To open the bank account, you visit a bank branch in the city you live in with the following documents. The type of documents might vary from bank to bank but most banks request the following from an expat

  • Passport

  • Permanent Resident card

  • Proof of Address

  • CURP

  • At least MX $500 pesos

In the case of myself, I did not have the utility bills or the lease in my name, so I had to take the following extra documents as proof of my address

  • Bank letter to be signed by the landlord

    • if you tell the bank that the utility bills and the apartment lease are not in your name, they will give you a document to get signed off from your landlord. If this is the case most likely you will need 2 trips to open your bank account.

I had to visit the bank 3 times because the 1st time, the system to open a bank account for a non-Mexican citizen was down so I had to make a 2nd trip another day. And on the 2nd day, the bank told me to bring the signed bank letter mentioned above and this wasn't mentioned to me on my 1st visit. Finally on my 3rd trip, after about 3 hours, they were able to open an account for me. Another important point is that there will several documents that need your signature. Make sure your signature is almost exactly the same every time you sign or they will make you sign again and again.
