Grocery Shopping in Mexico
There are no plastic bags used in grocery shops. Remember to take your reusable grocery bag

Grocery shopping

Grocery shopping in Mexico has few extra steps compared to your average grocery run in the US. Living in Nuevo Leon, the most common grocery chain is Soriana. This is the most popular grocery chain among Mexicans. The extra few steps in a normal grocery run in a grocery shop in Mexico is taking your own grocery bags. No shops will have plastic bags. You will have to buy the grocery chain's reusable bags. Most grocery chains have a person to bag the groceries and it is recommended to tip the baggers MX $10-$15 pesos. There is also self checkout in bigger grocery chains such as Soriana. Following are some of the most popular grocery chains in Nuevo Leon among Mexicans.

  • Soriana

  • HEB

  • City Market

Soriana and HEB is more affordable than City Market. But City Market has a more wider choice of international food. An interesting note about the employees at HEB and City Market are that they are dressed business formal. Also most stores if they have more than 1 floor, they have an escalator designed for grocery carts. Roughly a grocery run for single person would be MX $500 to $2000 pesos per week.

Mexico also has the US grocery chain giants Walmart and Costco in most states.

There is also convenience chain stores such as Seven Eleven but the most popular one in Mexico is Oxxo.

Another observation from food products here in Mexico is the missing cartoon mascots. On products such as cereals with famous cartoon mascots, they are all censored to reduce unhealthy foods being marketed to children.
